Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is highly valued at Broughton Hall and supports the Catholic ethos of the school. The central aim of our school is to provide the very best educational opportunities enabling each girl to develop her God-given talents, to grow in confidence and self-esteem and fulfil her potential up to and including Oxbridge entrance. We recognise that PSHE is crucial in enabling our students to become confident, independent learners who are able to take their place in a constantly changing society.


We aim to develop students’ self-awareness, positive self-esteem and confidence to:

  • Lead healthy lifestyles
  • Keep themselves and others safe
  • Have worthwhile and fulfilling relationships
  • Respect the differences between people
  • Develop independence and responsibility
  • Play an active role as members of a democratic society
  • Make the most of their own and others’ abilities
  • Develop skills which are required  for successful employment
 

PSHE is timetabled on a fortnightly basis. Students are taught in their form rooms by their form tutor. This enables students and staff to develop supportive relationships with each other which is key to the delivery of outstanding PSHE lessons. Ground rules are established at the beginning of each year in order to provide a safe and supportive environment in which sensitive issues can be delivered and discussed. Lessons have an active learning approach and can include media based discussions, debates, role plays and presentations.
 

The PSHE scheme of work is spiral in nature, and builds on previous learning. The KS3 scheme of work takes into account the knowledge, skills and attitudes that have been developed in KS2.  The core themes that are covered across Key Stages 3, 5 and 5 through the spiral curriculum are: -

The scheme of work is a constantly evolving document which takes into consideration the ever-changing world that our students inhabit.  It is informed through Pupil Voice; student and staff evaluations; consultation with Progress and Support Managers and Directors of Learning; Governors; consultation with parents; partnership working with both local and national agencies and information from Public Health.  Parents and carers are encouraged to contact the school if they wish to discuss any aspects of the scheme of work.

The scheme of work is supported and enriched by Health Days; Theatre in Education productions; work related learning activities.  Partnership working both local and national is integral to the successful implementation of PSHE, Citizenship and Careers Education at Broughton Hall.  Brook, Armistead, Fagends, LIFE, So To Speak, MYA, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, HMRC, DWF, PwC and Choose Life are amongst those agencies that provide support for our health days and PSHE lessons.
